What is an alternative to gesso for oil painting?

I want a cheap alternative for gesso, with the same quality. If you are going to tell me gesso is cheap and affordable do not reply, I dont want to here about gesso, I want to hear about alternatives, or make my own primer recipes. I know where to buy gesso, but it is too expensive for my needs.

  • Beyond Mordant:

If you have chalk quarries nearby you could grind your own and add rabbit skin glue…if you can catch a rabbit.

You can try primer from a hardware store and maybe even the Kilz brand of primer. Oil paints typically need a well-primed surface to ensure the oil vehicle does not eat away at it.
If price were not an issue, another alternative would be two layers of Golden’s Gac 100 as a sizer then two layers of matte medium.
